Gifted and Talented

Our Philosophy
The Program for Gifted of the Texarkana, Arkansas School District is committed to the intellectual and creative development of students to their fullest potential.  It is recognized that gifted students need a learning environment which will provide them continuous opportunities to discover, to develop and to expand their perceptual, cognitive, and creative skills in a variety of areas at all academic levels.  To achieve this, the curriculum is designed with an emphasis on awakening and fostering creativity, and providing divergent thinking opportunities through creative problem solving, demonstration of leadership skills, increased awareness of current happenings, and development of creative thinking skills.

Our Goals

  • To present alternative curricular and programmatic strategies to integrate the gifted student's learning experiences and environments into a comprehensive educational program.

  • To explore ways to establish a positive relationship, bridging the Program for Gifted and the existing regular classroom program.

  • To provide an opportunity for gifted students to maximize their potential, to utilize their unique abilities in program options tailored not only to their needs, but interest areas as well and to enable the gifted students to be creators and producers of ideas and solutions rather than just consumers and digesters of knowledge.


Special Education

P.L. 105-17 or The Reauthorization of IDEA of 1997, formerly know as P.L. 94-142, governs states as to the provision of services for children with disabilities (birth-21).  The Law provides for:

  • the assurance that all children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public education that emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for employment and independent living;
  • the assurance that the rights of children with disabilities and their parents are protected;
  • assistance to public agencies, local education agencies, and educational service agencies to provide for the education of children with disabilities;
  • the assessment and assurance of the effectiveness of efforts to educate children with disabilities.

Texarkana Arkansas School District provides special education and related services to students who qualify under one of the following categories:

  • Autism
  • Deaf-Blindness
  • Developmental Delay
  • Emotional Disturbance
  • Hearing Impairment
  • Mental Retardation
  • Multiple Disabilities
  • Orthapedic Impairment
  • Other Health Impairment
  • Specific Learning Disability
  • Speech and/or Language Impairment
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Visual Impairment

School Health Services

  • The school nurse assesses the health needs of students and staff and provides appropriate and timely referrals.
  • School nurses provide assessments for scoliosis, vision, hearing, dental, blood pressure, growth and development, health problems and behavior.
  • The school nurse provides emergency first aid and works with the school community to identify safety hazards and recommends prevention programs.
  • The school nurse is involved in communicable disease control through the implementation of immunization laws and screenings.
  • Health counseling for chronic illness, nutrition, disease prevention and healthy lifestyles are part of the school nurse's role.
  • The school nurse is a resource for health related issues and health education.
  • School nurses are providers of school health services including case management.
